Vail Daily Letter: School safety

Vail Daily
Vail, CO Colorado

The tragic shooting and wounding of two students at Deer Creek Middle School in Littleton is a sad reminder of the perilous and sometimes unpredictable world we live in. We are a safe community; however, living in the high country can create an unrealistic sense of immunity to the violence that in some places is an all-too-common occurrence.

The residents of Eagle County need to know that your Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the school district and law enforcement agencies throughout the county, is actively engaged in the safety of our school campuses.

Our school resource officers are in and around our schools on a daily basis and have special training in responding to such events. The Eagle County Special Operations Unit (which includes officers from the Sheriff’s Office and Avon, Eagle and Vail police departments) is constantly training in the most up-to-date methods in responding to an active shooter incident in or around our school campuses.

This school shooting, like all others, will provide valuable lessons on how we can improve our response to keep our children as safe as possible.

Let’s just hope we never have to put our training to real use.

Joe Hoy, Eagle County sheriff
