Vail Daily letter: Stuck in the middle ground

Compromise and common sense – both of these things seem to disappear whenever the gun control debate gets brought up.

On one hand, we have people like Mr. Geraghty (Jan. 31 letter to the editor) who propose altering or getting rid of the Second Amendment for the sake of our children’s safety. To him, I leave a quote by Benjamin Franklin: “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Then, on the other hand, we have the NRA and gun lobbyists who act like King George III has been reborn to steal their liberty when things like expanded background checks and high-capacity magazine bans are brought up. To them, I say: How will having a 10-round clip for your weapon, as opposed to a 15- or 20-round clip, going to affect your life in any way? (Except to maybe get the liberals off your back for a few months.)

Both sides of this debate seem to be running to the most radical proposals they can think of, while the rest of us in the middle wait for a compromise that both sides aren’t happy with but can live with and does something to lower gun violence.

Looking at this political climate, I think we’ll be waiting a while.
