Vail Daily letter: Supports Van Beek

Lou Samara
Vail, CO, Colorado

I have known and worked alongside James Van Beek for many years. In my eight years at the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, I had the privilege to know James. We worked together as road deputies and then as field training officers and when he became the hostage negotiator, I joined the Special Operation Unit, or SWAT. We have become lifelong friends, as close as brothers. We ventured into other businesses together but the Sheriff’s Office was James’ primary focus. Law enforcement became his chosen profession and lifestyle.

His wife, Carrie, has been more than supportive of this lifestyle, which at times is very trying. She has become stronger and even more supportive of James and law enforcement. During his past years overseas working as an international civilian police officer, Carrie has had to pick up the slack and take on the role of a single mom while James was working teaching others to be moral and ethical law enforcement officers.

I mention this because as I look at our current society, we need people like James and Carrie Van Beek in leadership roles where they can be an example and make a positive impact in the lives of those around them. Their marital bond will give James the support and freedom he needs to lead Eagle County into this new environment.

His strong faith and family values will serve the people of Eagle County and their primary law enforcement organization. The Sheriff’s Office serves as an example for the entire community, and with a man like James at the helm, I believe the department will be headed in the right direction. When we take a look at what has become of our country and our society, we see the need for people like James in leadership roles.

As a father, businessman and a concerned citizen, I am excited that James has taken the challenge to stand up and stand out and make a difference! I wish him much success in his campaign and all those who read this letter need to know that choosing James Van Beek for sheriff will be a boon to the county and her people!
