Vail Daily letter: Vail Daily letter: Team effort for successful veterans events

Debbie Robbins
Vail, CO, Colorado

On behalf of Pat Hammon and the rest of the VFW Post, along with all the other veterans in this valley, I would like to thank all those who made our Veterans Day Awareness Week successful and meaningful.

Thanks to the school communities who hosted veteran guest speakers and patriotic assemblies in their honor. The donations from your PTAs and schools will come back to the students you serve. A graduating senior from each of our local high schools will receive the VFW Post college scholarship each spring.

Thanks to the principals, assistant principals, school coordinators, music teachers, choruses who sang, musicians who performed and parents and staff members who provided breakfast or lunch to keep the “Vet Entourage” moving on from school to school. Thanks to the students for making the valley’s veterans feel so welcome and appreciated.

Thanks also to those who supported the annual public ceremony at Freedom Park on 11/11/11: Heather at Starbucks of Edwards for donating coffee, Sharon Wible and the foods classes at Battle Mountain High School for providing mountains of baked goods and WECMRD for use of their sound system and bleachers.

Special thanks go to Commissioner Jon Stavney for leading the Pledge of Allegiance, Deacon Baird for his benediction and the Navy hymn and Sheresa Wilbanks, director and the Battle Mountain show choir, who opened the ceremony with the national anthem.

I appreciate the veterans who took time out of their busy week to attend the school programs where we reached a dozen student bodies. I would particularly like to acknowledge Berne and John Krueger, Daryl Woodworth, Amy VanGoey and Pat Hammon for sharing their experiences, pride in being a part of the military and love of our country.

And finally, I know I speak for those of us in this valley who have never served in the military: Thanks to our veterans for being willing to lay down their lives to protect our freedom. Thank you, veterans. We honor you.
