Vail Daily letter: Watch out for tree wells
Vail, CO, Colorado
As a seasonal employee at Vail Valley Medical Center, I see a large number of skiers who have had a mishap on the mountain and require medical attention. Generally, we can patch these folks up and after they heal, life carries on. My adult children both live and ride in Whitefish, Mont., where there has been the death of 29- and 16-year-old riders due to becoming stuck in tree wells.
This was brought home even closer just last week after a friend got caught in a tree well in Silverton. As she related it, emotions went from boy this is stupid and gee this is tough going to oh damm, I could die. She got out with a real feeling of how close an encounter it really was. Pay attention. Too close to a tree could mean the end of you or a loved one.
