Vail Daily obituary: Marti ‘Grosi’ Gass, Oct. 8, 1932, to May 6, 2017
Marti was born in Zurich, Switzerland, on Oct. 8, 1932. She passed peacefully on May 6, 2017, surrounded by her family.
Marti migrated from Switzerland to New York in her early 20s. She then followed her brother west with her daughters, Monika and Doris, to the Vail Valley in 1976.
She is remembered for her great talent of crocheting. She kept people warm and comfortable with her giving spirit. Always high in demand, her blankets were welcome gifts and often brightly designed in Denver Broncos colors. She touched more lives than she will ever know.
Her friends and family remember her traditional hardworking values that built the foundation for generations of family to come. Marti “Grosi” was a champion of the underdog. She loved animals and was a good sport. She was an authentic Swiss cook, fondly remembered for her family meals and salads.
Her grandchildren and family were the light of her life. She is survived by her brother Walter and wife Ingrid Gass, daughter Monika and husband Mark Smith, daughter Doris Elliott, grandchildren Kristi Smith, Nick Smith and Lily Elliott. She is preceded in death by her parents, Fritz and Lina Gass; brother Fritz Gass; and son-in-law Scott Elliott.
Participate in The Longevity Project
The Longevity Project is an annual campaign to help educate readers about what it takes to live a long, fulfilling life in our valley. This year Kevin shares his story of hope and celebration of life with his presentation Cracked, Not Broken as we explore the critical and relevant topic of mental health.
Marti requested no public gathering in her memory. There will be a family-only memorial honoring her final wishes.
