VAIL – Moving up and staying put is a good trick. Steve Pope is doing just that.Pope, the publisher of the Vail Daily since 2000, last week was named general manger of Colorado Mountain News Media, the Daily’s Gypsum-based parent company. Pope will replace Bob Brown, who recently accepted the job of chief operating officer of Swift Newspapers. That family-owned company, based in Reno, Nev., owns Colorado Mountain News Media and several other newspapers in Nevada, California, and Oregon. The company also owns the Greeley Tribune.Pope will remain publisher of the Vail Daily, but won’t be in the office as much. He said some internal changes will allow him to hold both jobs.”I’ll split my time between Vail and our other units probably about 50-50,” Pope said. “I’m tremendously excited about this new challenge,” Pope added. “It should be fun, like an E-ticket ride at Disneyland, if you’re old enough to remember that.”Pope will reluctantly admit he’s old enough to remember E-tickets. He’ll also somewhat reluctantly admit he’s been in the newspaper business for more than 40 years. He has held management jobs with newspaper groups including Gannett, Knight Ridder and HomeTown Communications. Before coming to the Daily, his most recent job was with MediaNews Group, the company that owns the Denver Post. “Steve has reaffirmed what his (career) history told us when we hired him,” Brown said. “He’s a remarkable newspaper person… Colorado Mountain News Media is in good hands with him. He’s a master at marketing, and has some visionary ideas.”

And, said another colleague, the company has a tireless worker and community advocate in its top spot.”As chairman, he’s given us great assistance,” said Vail Valley Chamber and Tourism Bureau director Frank Johnson. “He’s a good, solid, strategic thinker. He’s been invaluable at building community, and helping the community make wise decisions.”While Pope’s new dual role might seem daunting, he said he’s ready for the challenge.”Colorado Mountain News Media’s got a great team in place,” Pope said. “I’m excited to get to work.”====================What’s a CMNM?Colorado Mountain News Media owns:Daily papers:Vail DailyAspen Times
