Vail Daily wins 21 press awards

Nikki Katz

EAGLE-VAIL ” The Colorado Press Association recognized the Vail Daily this year with awards for writing, photography design and its Web site,

Vail Daily staff members won awards in 21 of the 39 categories in which the Colorado Press Association, including best editorial and design, best news story and best Web site.

“The neat thing is the awards cover all key areas of the newspaper … which shows that we have balance,” Vail Daily Publisher Steve Pope said.

The Colorado Press Association Better Newspaper Contest ranks newspapers by circulation categories. The Vail Daily was previously in a category including newspapers with circulations of 100,000. With a circulation of almost 15,000, the Vail Daily could hardly compete, Pope said.

In 2004, however, the Vail Daily took second place for general excellence in the Colorado-Wyoming Associated Press Contest, which included newspapers with circulations up to 100,000.

Participate in The Longevity Project

The Longevity Project is an annual campaign to help educate readers about what it takes to live a long, fulfilling life in our valley. This year Kevin shares his story of hope and celebration of life with his presentation Cracked, Not Broken as we explore the critical and relevant topic of mental health.

“Our quality has increased every year for the last 10 years,” Pope said. “The awards speak for our quality.”

The Vail Daily’s strong readership, about 91 percent of the valley, is the real measure of the newspaper’s success, Managing Editor Don Rogers said.

“We work for the readers,” Rogers said, “and we make the best paper we can every day for them.”
