EAGLE-VAIL ” Steve Gall, the advertising director of the Duluth News Tribune in Minnesota, will take over as the Vail Daily’s publisher on April 18.

He replaces Steve Pope, who is now the general manager of Colorado Mountain News Media, the Vail Daily’s Gypsum-based parent company.

Gall is a 25-year veteran of the newspaper industry. Along with his work as ad director for the Duluth News Tribune, which is owned by Knight Ridder, he also oversees the ad departments for a group of community newspapers the company owns in the region.

Gall previously served as general manager of Community Newspapers, a group of newspapers acquired by Knight Ridder in 2004. He also was vice president of sales and marketing for Murphy McGinnis Media, an independently owned newspaper company with 17 newspapers, seven shoppers, and an Interactive company.

Prior to his time with Murphy McGinnis Media, Gall worked for Huckle Publishing as publisher of the Owatonna People’s Press in Owatonna, Minn. He was also the marketing director for Huckle Publishing and their publications.

His experience on both the editorial and advertising sides of smaller papers will serve him well at the Vail Daily, Gall said.

“It’s something that’s near and dear to me ” being an integral part of a community, and knowing the readers and interacting with them,” Gall said.

Gall said he would like to write a regular column in the Vail Daily.

Prior to his positions with Huckle Publishing, Gall worked for Thomson Newspapers, Inc. as corporate sales trainer, regional advertising consultant, advertising director and sales representative.

Over the last few years, Gall also has also been on the board of directors for the Duluth United Way, the Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Chamber of Commerce and the Community Foundation. He has been founder and board member of arts organizations and is active in newspaper industry activities.

Gall spends his free time playing hockey, water skiing, mountain biking and inline skating. He also is an avid skier. When it is too cold to do any outdoor activities he’ll most likely be found at his drawing board.

Gall is married to his college sweetheart, Ellen. They have two daughters, Krysti, 15, and Kassi, 11.

Gall has been visiting the Vail area for more than 30 years.

“I’ve been coming out there since the day after I received my driver’s license,” he said. “I remember when the highway was just two lanes past Loveland.”

Gall said his family is very excited to become involved in a community that has been so close their hearts.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we are grateful for it,” Gall said. “We can’t wait to become active citizens, make new friends and enjoy the bounty of nature the valley has to offer.”
