Vail Daily’s View: Let summer officially begin
July 2, 2010
If you are reading this, congratulations. Not for reading, but for being here.
The real secret to our valley is summer. If you live here, you well understand the adage about coming here to ski and staying here because of summer.
If you are visiting, well, you might be getting an inkling of why the locals feel this way.
And so welcome. Summer doesn’t begin until Avon shoots off the greatest fireworks show in the Rockies over Nottingham lake and nearly 30,000 people line the parade route tomorrow morning in Vail.
Minturn provides a more folksy, old-time small-town parade experience today as a warmup to Vail. And if you haven’t quite gotten your fill of fireworks or need the fix properly on the Fourth itself, well, there’s the Eagle County Fairgrounds fireworks show after dark (10 p.m.) that rivals Avon’s display.
Young families might go for Eagle’s bicycle parade on the morning of the Fourth, followed by such traditional Americana as a pie-eating contest and such at the Town Park.

And, of course, Bravo! music fest, the Lacrosse Shootout, Vail Ice Skating Show, Hill Climb running race and other events are available. There’s no way you can’t find something you like.
That’s not even getting to the hiking and biking trails, the camping or picnic way off in the backcountry somewhere.
Yes indeed, summer is a blast up here. And it starts with a bang.
