Vail, CO Colorado

VAIL, Colorado – Vail Fire Chief Mark Miller is urging residents to refrain from building snow caves close to the roadways, citing numerous dangers.

“Snow caves and snowplows simply don’t mix,” Miller said. “The risk is too great.”

Miller says the danger from the blade of a snowplow or the sheer force of a projectile thrown from a plow could cause serious injury.

The town’s snowplow drivers have encountered several snow cave hazards in the neighborhoods since the weekend and are asking for the community’s help in removing them.—- –

Chief Miller recommends keeping snow caves and other snow building activities at least 100 feet from the roadway. The town’s police and fire departments will make regular sweeps through the neighborhoods to identify and facilitate the removal of such hazards.
