Vail has a long list of 2019 construction projects
There’s a lot of work going on in Vail this year. The town of Vail recently released an overview of those projects.
Vail Village Parking Structure: New elevator cabs will be installed on the eastern pair of elevators in the Vail Village parking structure beginning May 13. Repairs to the elevators will be completed one at a time so that one will always be operational and available to the public. Town of Vail contact is John King at 970-376-0949.
Slifer Square water feature replacement: The town has contracted with BrightView Land Development, Inc. for design and construction services to replace the existing water feature in Slifer Square located between the Vail Village parking structure and the Covered Bridge. The work is required to eliminate the water leak and improve the safety of the water feature. The work began April 15 with a full street closure scheduled for April 22; completion is scheduled for the end of June. During this time, the in-town bus route will be re-routed to the South Frontage Road. This work follows up the completion of deep utility work and stormwater quality improvements in Slifer Square in 2018. Town of Vail contact is Chad Salli at 970-479-2169.
East Meadow Drive Snowmelt and Paver Replacement: The town has contracted with United Companies to replace the snowmelt and pavers on East Meadow Drive from Village Center Drive to Willow Bridge Road. The work is scheduled to begin April 22 and will be completed by May 31. In coordination with the work at Slifer Square, the in-town bus route will be re-routed to the South Frontage Road to bypass this location. Vehicle access to any portion of East Meadow Drive will need to coordinate with Checkpoint Charlie to determine the best point of access. Town of Vail contact is Tom Kassmel at 970-479-2235.
Vail Town Center south roundabout paver apron installation: The town has contracted with United Companies to install a paver apron at the Vail Town Center south roundabout. The work is scheduled to begin April 22 and will be completed by May 31. During work hours, the roundabout will be narrowed to a single lane roundabout. Vail Transportation Center bus ramp replacement: The town has contracted with Icon, Inc., to replace the bus ramps at the Vail Transportation Center. The work is scheduled to begin April 22 and will be completed by May 31. The three ramps will be shut down one at a time to maintain limited access up onto the Transportation Center. Mountain View Residences Phase II, 434 South Frontage Road East: The north side of the parking garage is the staging area for trucks and material deliveries. General contractor is Shaw Builders LLC. Ski and Snowboard Club Vail redevelopment: Phase I of the project has received a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy; areas still under construction are contained within the construction fenced area. Site grading, cleanup and landscaping will occur as weather permits. This is a redevelopment of the Ski and Snowboard Vail site to include a private and public club and multi-family residential dwelling units. Hill Building, 254 Bridge Street: Construction deliveries will continue on Bridge Street between 7 and 8:30 a.m. This is a major remodel of the building. The project completion date is scheduled for early summer of 2019. Town of Vail contact is Leonard Sandoval at 970-390-4677
Phase II of the Master Facility Plan includes the tear-down and replacement of the current east wing administration building and garage, replacing it with a new parking garage and hospital building to house new emergency and imaging departments, as well as a new lobby, central plant, tenant space and material management department.
All hospital services will remain fully functional throughout the construction. To access the Emergency Department, use Vail Road/West Meadow Drive.
Hospital patients and visitors should park (valet parking only, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.) in the hospital parking lot on West Meadow Drive. Patients and guests of the Medical Professional Building (US Bank) should park (valet parking, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) in the underground parking lot of the Medical Professional Building accessible by West Meadow Drive.
Row House Units 9 & 10, 303 Gore Creek Drive: Single lane closures are scheduled for deliveries throughout the spring and summer months. Construction activity will be contained within property boundaries and construction fencing.

Lionshead Parking Structure, 395 South Frontage Road: The town of Vail will begin structural and topping slab repairs on the Lionshead parking structure beginning April 23. Lionshead Village Lower Concert Hall Plaza stair replacement: The town has contracted with Icon, Inc., to replace the lowest level of stairs at Concert Hall Plaza near Moe’s BBQ. The work is scheduled to begin April 22 and will be completed by May 31. Pedestrian access will be detoured via Lionshead Place and the Arrabelle drive entrance. Lionsquare Lodge South interior renovation, 660 Lionshead Place: The project includes interior upgrades to the existing conference room, including new celling finishes, room dividers, lighting
Interstate 70 Avon to Vail resurfacing: The Colorado Department of Transportation, with United Companies, will be resurfacing all lanes and shoulders of I-70 between Avon and West Vail. They will also replace guardrail and bridge joints, extend the eastbound acceleration lane at the Minturn exit and improve drainage. Work is expected to last until mid-October. General working hours will be nightly from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Motorists can expect a single lane closure, both EB and WB I-70 during work hours, with speeds reduced to 40 mph for safety
Ford Park Weather Shelter, 518 South Frontage Road: Construction is underway on the Ford Park Weather Shelter. Ford Park, East Betty Ford Way: Sewer line repairs are scheduled for this spring. East Betty Ford Way will be closed to all traffic April 22 through May 10. Vehicles will be allowed to use West Betty Ford Way. Pedestrians may also use the walkway along the east as south sides of the softball fields. Town of Vail contact is John King at 970-479-2170.
Vail Golf Course, new starter shack: The project consists of demolition of the existing building and reconstruction of a new one. Construction is underway with in June. Vail Recreation District contact is Scott O’Connell at 970-477-5264.

I-70 East Vail landscape improvements: Remaining landscaping and punch list items are scheduled for spring and summer. The town of Vail has contracted with Rocky Mountain Custom Landscapes to install landscape improvements at the East Vail interchange. Stephens Park water quality improvements: The project consists of the installation of porous brick pavers in the parking lot to capture the stormwater runoff from the parking lot allowing the water to infiltrate into the ground versus discharging directly into Gore Creek. The project is expected to be complete by Memorial Day. During construction, the parking lot will be closed, park users will be allowed to park along the eastbound shoulder of the South Frontage Road. Town of Vail contact is Chad Salli at 970-479-2169.
Fire Hydrant repair and water main upgrade, 2841 Basingdale Boulevard: This project will repair the damaged fire hydrant and upgrade the water main to improve fire flow availability, increase reliability and improve the level of service to customers in the area. Red Sandstone School renovation: The school is open. Vehicular access to the school and Gymnastics Center is now one-way only going east up to the school with traffic exiting around the west side of the parking structure to reach the North Frontage Road. The exterior and site work (landscaping, etc.) will be completed in the spring as weather and temperatures allow.
Red Sandstone Elementary School Parking Garage: The first and second level parking is open for use by qualified pass holders. The third level is occupied by the school contractor. The fourth level of the structure is for Red Sandstone school staff, teachers and employees. Landscaping and punch list items are scheduled for the spring/summer of 2019. Solar Vail Apartments, 501 North Frontage Road West: The project is contained within the construction fence. The former employee housing located just east of the Vail Gymnastics Center is being replaced with a four-story, 65-unit rental housing development by Sonnenalp Resorts. The valley’s commercial and residential property markets are similar in some ways — availability is tight and nothing is what you’d call “cheap.”
