Vail health: Burn some calories before tucking into the turkey

EAGLE COUNTY – Looking for a little exercise before you tuck into a turkey feast on Thursday? Don’t worry, local gyms are offering lots of ways to help you burn calories before the tryptophan coma sets in. • The Vail Vitality Center at the Vail Athletic Club is offering two events designed to jumpstart your metabolism on Thursday: the Gobble Wobble and Yoga Body Bootcamp. The second annual Gobble Wobble is led by Ellen Miller and takes place from 7:30 to 9 a.m.; Yoga Body Bootcamp will be taught by Tracy Long from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The Gobble Wobble is a high-energy walk/hike/run up Golden Peak with Miller, a climber, renowned cardio coach, and founder of Mountain Divas and Outdoor Fitness. The group meets at the Vail Vitality Center front desk (located downstairs at Vail Mountain Lodge in Vail Village) at 7:30 a.m., and embark on a guided snow hike. The Gobble Wobble is offered free of charge and is open to Vail Vitality Center members and non-members of all abilities. Participants are encouraged to wear trail running shoes or lightweight hiking shoes, dress in layers, bring Yaxtrax or Micro-spikes and wear a big smile.Yoga Body Bootcamp is a new yoga-fitness hybrid created by Deborah Williamson, offering a total body workout that combines yoga poses and interval sessions. In addition to an intense, sweaty, fun, ever-evolving workout, participants achieve different brainwave states that moving and breathing in this particular way manifest. Cost for Yoga Body Bootcamp is $15 for members or guests. The class takes place at The Yoga Studio at the Vail Vitality Center. It’s a great event because all the proceeds go to charity and it’s good for our community to get together for an event.”The free walk/run starts at 8 a.m. Thursday at the Athletic Club at The Westin, located at 126 Riverfront Lane in Avon, and includes both 5K and 10K distances. Families of all ages are welcome, including dogs. Costumes are encouraged.”People get dressed up for it,” Duddy said. “It’s really fun. And if you don’t want to run it, you can walk.”Afterwards, a light breakfast will be served. After the race, stay for a yoga or cardio class from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.Donations to the Salvation Army of Vail are appreciated, either of kids’ winter clothing or $15. There will be a guided meditation at the beginning and a longer savasana at the end so participants can focus on the blessings life offers. The class is $18 drop in fee or free for members. Trainer Patti Hyre will teach her annual Turkey Blast Camp starting at 9:30 a.m. Thanksgiving morning. The camp starts with a 30-minute spin class, followed by a 45-minute boot camp focused on cardio and strength training. The T-Day classes have been a tradition for the past nine years, Hyre said. After the boot camp, yoga instructor Libby Maio will teach an hour long yoga class. Reserve a spot for the spin class if interested, as spots are filling up. Classes are free for members and $20 for nonmembers.
