Vail January sales tax drops 13.5 percent

VAIL ” January sales tax collections in Vail dropped 13.5 percent from 2008 levels.

Lodging led the decline with a 19.6 percent drop. Retail sales tax collections were down 14.6 percent and food and beverage sales taxes dropped 7 percent.

Sales in Lionshead ” down 7 percent ” weren’t hit as hard as those in Vail Village, which was down 13.9 percent from the first month of 2008.

Overall, only food and beverage sales in Lionshead showed an increase ” 7.4 percent ” from last year. Town-wide, only retail liquor sales were higher than last year, up 5.8 percent.
