Newspapers deal with facts, and it would be nice if the facts were accurate. In the Town Talk section of last Saturday’s Vail Daily A19, the Ownbys of Gypsum are pictured reading the Vail Daily while on Kauai.
The caption states that Kauai is the “smallest island of the Hawaiian Islands.” Not true!
There are eight main Hawaiian islands. The island of Hawaii is the largest (4,038 square miles), followed by Maui (727 square miles), Oahu (597 square miles), and then Kauai (552 square miles). Lanai, Molokai, Kahoolawe, and Niihau are all smaller than Kauai.
Kauai is far from being the “smallest island of the Hawaiian Islands.” And by the way, it is certainly the most lovely of the islands.
