Vail middle schoolers take the stage

Vail Daily staff report
Vail, CO Colorado
Special to the Vail DailyVail Mountain School middle school students Georgia Hintz, left, and Berkeley Mashburn work on some of the props for a production of "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe."

VAIL, Colorado “-While most Vail, Colorado seniors are worrying about final exams, essays, and art projects, Alex Morten is fretting over prop lists, costumes and stage makeup. Morten, a senior at Vail Mountain School, is directing a middle school play, “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” for her senior project. Twenty-six VMS middle schoolers are involved in the production.

“I want to learn everything I can about theater, and I thought that directing a play would be the best way to do that,” she said.

Morten specifically chose the classic fantasy tale by C.S. Lewis because “it’s a familiar story that I knew middle school kids could get excited about.”

With plans to study theater next year at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, Morton is gaining plenty of practical experience. When she chose “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” she knew it would be challenging for her and the middle school students involved in the show.

“This experience has opened my eyes and showed me how much really goes into making a show happen,” she said. “I am so proud of my cast because they have improved so much in the last few weeks, and they will surely put on an amazing show!”

“The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” performance is set for today at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Vail Mountain School theater. Tickets are being sold at the door for $5 per person.
