Special to the Daily/Vail Mountain School Senior Jack McRory, playing the King of Siam, sings "Is a Puzzlement" during a "King and I" rehearsal at Vail Mountain School. "King and I" begins at 7 p.m. today and runs through Saturday at the school's theater.

VAIL – The Vail Mountain School Players presents “The King and I” at 7 p.m. today. The performance runs Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 5 p.m.The storyline for “The King and I” follows a widowed English teacher, Anna Leonowens (played by junior Kelsey Ferguson), who travels to Siam in the mid 1800s to tutor the children of the Siamese king (played by senior Jack McRory). The plot twists and turns from there, leading to sometimes tragic, sometimes amusing moments between the two. “Playing a Siamese monarch has proved to be a challenge for me, but I feel it has helped me grow as an actor and become more serious about the field,” said McRory.

In order to fully immerse himself in his character, McRory is planning to shave his head bald, just as Yule Brenner did for the filming of the 1956 movie. I don’t like to do things half-heartedly when I really care about them, and acting has become one of those things. I can’t wait,” said McRory.Sophomore Laura Reichardt, who plays Prince Chulu Longkorn, the heir to the throne, also cut her hair to play the part.Included in this production are upper school students, several middle school students, as well as Ms. McCormicks’ third-grade class. A live band accompanies the performers.

Don Watson, Beth Swearingen and Dave Laub are directing the VMS cast and crew.”The students have worked very hard to produce this exceptionally challenging show,” said Laub. “The talent and level of professionalism from this particular group of actors/actresses amazes me. I think the end product will be entertaining and impressive.” Tickets prices are $10 for students and $15 for adults. There is a $5 reservation fee.
