VAIL PASS, Colorado ” Stretches of the Vail Pass bike path will be closed for the next few months as harmful traction sand is removed from Black Gore Creek. The work begins Monday.

The sand is poured on Interstate 70 during the winter to give cars better traction but is harmful to fish and insects when is spills into the creek, which flows alongside the interstate and into Vail’s Gore Creek.

The work will be done about a mile above the gate on Big Horn Road. Half of the path will be closed while the truck haul the sand away. Flaggers will alternate traffic when necessary.

The work will occur from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The entire path will be open the rest of the day.

The project should be done by Oct. 31. The contractor, American West Construction LLC has established a public information phone number that will provide frequent updates on the project status, changes to the traffic control plan, and other important project information. The number is (970)471-5094 and can be called between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays.
