Vail Pass open; more snow expected

VAIL, Colorado ” Interstate 70 is now open after being closed this morning for avalanche work, said Bob Wilson, spokesman for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

A winter storm warning has been issued for the mountains until midnight, with 6 inches to a foot of new snow expected in the Vail Valley, said Dan Cuevas, technician for the National Weather Service.

More than 40-mile-per-hour winds and up to 80-mile-per-hour gusts on ridge tops are expected, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm from the Pacific Northwest that arrived Friday should leave overnight, but another storm should arrive Tuesday night , Cuevas said.

Cuevas did not know how many inches of snow the Vail Valley would get in that storm, which should leave Wednesday, he said.

“There will probably be a good chance of measurable snow,” he said.

Beaver Creek Mountain reported 16 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours and Vail Mountain reported 10 inches.

Beaver Creek Mountain reported 25 inches of new snow in the past 48 hours and Vail Mountain reported 16 inches.
