Vail seeks wildfire crew members

VAIL, Colorado – The town of Vail has begun taking applications for six seasonal wildland firefighter openings that will be used to staff the town’s wildfire mitigation crew for the fifth consecutive season. The crew members will work from May 7 to Oct. 31 and will assist with tree cutting, pile burns, property inspections and other assignments to support the town’s forest health projects, which will continue for the next several years. The new crew members will also be available to respond to wildfire incidents in the surrounding area.

Applicants must have or show the ability to obtain a basic wildland firefighter certification as well as a tree cutting certification within 30 days of being hired. Applications are due by April 20 and are available on the town’s website at vailgov.com.

Last season the crew was responsible for mitigating 114 acres on public property, 75 percent completion of a town-wide hazardous tree assessment, plus free FireWise property inspections. In addition, the crew responded on 15 wildfire incidents. –
