VAIL, Colorado – This fall find freedom in minimalism, Vail Valley. New Yorkers are toning down with a carefully cultured silhouette that’s both fitted and draped paired with chic accents. When getting dressed to head to the office or back to school, choose one stand-out accessory like killer boots or a massive necklace and layer on basics for a look that’s fashion forward.

Black jacket

The lightweight, cropped black jacket is the statement piece of the season. Go basic or bejeweled, depending on which style you’ll wear more. Dress it up or dress it down. Wear it to the office over a draped dress or at night with trousers or jeans and a T-shirt.

Wedged bootie

Rarely do ultimate style and ultimate comfort coalesce – and in a shoe nonetheless. A favorite for fall, the wedge takes you from day to night just like that. Wear with a pair of cigarette pants and a feminine blouse or vintage T-shirt (see below).

Vintage T-shirt

This is great news for those of you who never stopped wearing your T-shirts from high school. Rock on. If not, head to the local thrift store and stock up or do it yourself. Just today I saw a guy wearing a DIY shirt that read “stop shopping.” Pretty good.

Long skirt

Slip into a long skirt with boots, a button down and a tailored men’s blazer with a belt. It’s more rock n’ roll than country.

Denim jacket

Rediscover your denim. Like T-shirts, you may have one of these hiding in your closet somewhere. It’s a great way to give some shape to a flowing dress.

Pants

The current shape of pants range from skinny to trouser, high wasted to subtly cropped. But be wary, the very flared pant and the bootcut pant are no-gos.

Prints

Shift from basics to nautical striped and fabulous florals. Plaid anything goes and P.S. that goes for your guy as well.

White shoes or a white bag

Don dark colors and step into some white oxfords or wedges, err snow boots. Offset your all-black ensemble with a sharp white bag. The contrast will be appreciated.

Classic white shirt

The white shirt is oh-so sensational this season and versatile ever more. Pair the timeless and sophisticated must-have with dress pants, a skirt or jeans, depending on the occasion. Throw on an edgy accessory and roll the sleeves up, just keep it crisp and keep it white.

Leggings

Keep rockin’ in the leggings. They’re here to stay. They look great layered with a draped T-shirt and a sweater and some sweet edgy shoes.
