Vail supports wilderness plan

VAIL, Colorado – The Vail Town Council voted Tuesday to support the portions of the Hidden wilderness proposal that are near Vail.

Six areas within the proposal are near the town of Vail – Spraddle Creek, Freeman Creek, Corral Creek, Elliot Ridge, Homestake and No Name. The Town Council voted 5-2 in favor of supporting the wilderness, with Councilman Kevin Foley and Mayor Dick Cleveland dissenting.

Foley said he was against such a restrictive designation, and that designations such as national recreation area would be more appropriate.

Daly said the town specifically didn’t want to comment on portions of the proposal that impact other jurisdictions.

The vote signals the town’s support for the proposed wilderness areas near Vail that are part of a larger wilderness bill that U.S. Rep. Jared Polis plans to submit to Congress this fall. It takes an act of Congress to designate wilderness.
