Vail to hire wildfire crew for third season
VAIL, Colorado ” The town of Vail has begun taking applications for six seasonal firefighter openings in the town’s wildfire mitigation crew.
The crew members will work from May 4 to Oct. 31 and will assist with tree cutting, pile burns, property inspections and other assignments to support the town’s forest health projects. The new firefighters will also be available to respond to wildfires in the surrounding area.
This will be the third season for the wildfire crew.
Applicants must have or show the ability to obtain a basic wildland firefighter certification as well as a tree cutting certification within 30 days of being hired. The salary range is $16 to $17 per hour. Applications are due March 27 and are available on the town’s Web site at http://www.vailgov.com.
Last season, the crew was responsible for canvassing 419 properties as part of a town-wide inspection process to facilitate the removal of dead trees on private property. Crews also removed 835 hazardous trees on public property, conducted 58 free Firewise property inspections and began burning the first of 1,500 slash piles in and around Vail.
Funding for the seasonal positions has been retained in the 2009 budget. A hiring freeze was enacted recently for all full-time positions as part of a $900,000 budget reduction.
The crew’s activities will again be managed by Tom Talbot, the department’s wildland coordinator.
