Vail Town Council set to discuss the future of Red Sandstone Elementary

VAIL, Colorado – The Vail Town Council will express its support to keep Red Sandstone Elementary School in operation during its regular evening meeting today, when a resolution urging the Eagle County School District to maintain Vail’s only public school will be read into the record. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the Town Council Chambers. The item is listed fifth on the agenda.

The school closure is under consideration by the school district as part of a $5.5 million budget-cutting measure. The Red Sandstone school opened in the 1970s, and the land is currently leased to the district by the town of Vail. Closing the school would have a detrimental impact on the town’s sense of community and its housing goals, according to the resolution. In addition, 33 percent of the district’s property taxes come from Vail.

The resolution will be forwarded to the Eagle County School Board prior to its meeting on Jan. 11, when it will continue its review of possible budget reductions.
