Vail underpass work on I-70 takes big step

VAIL — Construction of the Interstate 70 eastbound underpass bridge is nearing completion, and crews will soon begin transitioning the highway back to normal two-lane traffic in both directions, targeting a July 1 completion date for the underpass bridges.

If the weather cooperates, then here’s the schedule for the immediate future:

• There will be single-lane closures along eastbound I-70 on Thursday for striping work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. From 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Friday, there will be an eastbound I-70 right lane closure for barrier relocation.

• There will be a left lane closure Friday along eastbound I-70 from 7 a.m. until noon for additional barrier relocation work.

• Beginning this week, Xcel Energy’s contractor is installing a new valve set near Donovan Pavilion. This valve set will be used with the new gas line infrastructure through the underpass project site. Lane shifts and intermittent traffic stops may be encountered along South Frontage Road in conjunction with this work.

• Beginning July 5, the frontage roads will function as one-way traffic only though the project site. The traffic flow will mirror I-70 — North Frontage Road will be westbound only from Lion’s Ridge Loop to Timber Ridge, while South Frontage Road will be eastbound only from Cascade Resort to Cascade Crossing. Apart from the project site, the Frontage Roads will operate as normal two-way traffic.

Drivers traveling on the frontage roads who reach the one-way stretch in the wrong direction will have the opportunity to turn around and use I-70 or the opposite frontage road to reach their destination.

Throughout construction, there will be a variety of ways you can get more information about construction activities and associated traffic impacts.

Plan Your Commute

The Colorado Department of Transportation and the town of Vail have installed a camera to help commuters plan their drives and follow progress of the underpass construction. Different camera angles can be viewed by selecting “Control” and then “Positions.” This allows viewing of the overall project (Home), a zoomed in view of the bridge work (Bridge), and the status of traffic to the west (West) and east (East).

The camera is on line at http://www.codot. gov/projects/i70vailunderpass/streaming-camera.
