Vail Valley Academy dancers go for gold at the state competitions

EAGLE COUNTY — For the past 12 years, Colin Meiring has been taking Vail Valley Academy dancers to compete in state competitions in Denver. On March 21 and 22, 55 dancers participated in the Showbiz Talent Competition, held at the prestigious Ellie Calkins Opera House. This year there were 16 entries, some large groups and some solos.

It’s a two-day, 18-hour-a-day marathon of panic, sparkles and sequins. The Vail Valley Academy of Dance teachers Morgan Flahive-Foro, Maria Barry and Meiring were really proud of the Vail dancers for their show of camaraderie, team spirit, good behavior and professionalism.

The categories and levels are difficult to understand even for the most avid dance buffs. Needless to say, the dance dads were completely confused, but really proud.

Teachers enter students into four categories: Biz Kids for novice dancers; Sapphire for beginners,; Ruby for intermediate; and Diamond for advanced dancers.

These groups and solos placed in the top 10 for each of their categories with high scores:

Junior Jazz group placed fourth in the Ruby level

Junior Boys club placed first in the Biz Kids level

Junior Contemporary placed sixth in the Ruby level

Hannah Geisman, Serena Kozusko placed second in the Duet Diamond level

Alexa Dean and Taylor Petrowski placed fourth in the Duet Ruby level

Teen Jazz Lyrical placed third in the large group Ruby level

Jazz Fusion class placed fourth in the large group Ruby level

Hannah Geisman placed fifth in the solo Diamond level

Although many other dancers received high scores, they did not place in the overall top 10 lineup at the competition.
