EDWARDS — This weekend, the Vail Valley Art Guild will host a grand opening in its new gallery space in The Riverwalk at Edwards.

This “Side by Side” exhibit was a very special challenge for Art Guild members, where one photographer was randomly matched to one artist to work together as a team. Each team selected one subject, and the photographer would then take a photo and the artist would paint his or her impression of the subject. Sounds easy? Not so much. There is an expression, “Art is perception,” and interestingly enough, two people viewing the same subject do not always see the same thing.

The idea for this show started when photographer Rick Spitzer showed artist Joan Willoughby a photo of a picturesque barn. Willoughby asked to borrow the photo and produced a watercolor of the same barn. The images were so similar that they started asking other Art Guild members, “Who did it better?”

The grand opening reception is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, with music provided by the AWE Chamber Trio. The gallery will be open for additional hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The Vail Valley Art Guild Gallery is located on Main Street in the Amber Building of The Riverwalk at Edwards.
