VAIL VALLEY, Colorado –Teens in Colorado’s Vail Valley will be reading for the fun of it as the Avon Public Library celebrates Teen Read Week, taking place this week, through Saturday. They join thousands of other libraries and schools across the country who are encouraging teens to celebrate this year’s theme, “Read Beyond Reality @ your library,” which encourages teens to pick up a page-turner and read something out of this world and for sheer enjoyment.

“Today’s teens seem to have less and less free time, and there are increasingly more activities for them to take part in during what little leisure time they have,” said Cathy Cifelli, of teen services at Avon Public Library. “That is why it’s important to encourage teens to set aside some time to read.”

Cifelli hopes to increase teen literacy locally by offering the following programs for teens during Teen Read Week:

•-Beam Me Up a Good Book: A Bookswap Social

5:30-7:00 p.m. Tuesday

Bring a paperback book to trade and enjoy some snacks. Join in to create games, a menu and decorate for the Cyborg Soiree.

•-Cyborg Soiree (Halloween Party!)

6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday

Arrive dressed as your favorite sci-fi (android, space pirate) or fantasy character. Share props and talents. Taste gruesome and disgusting dishes. Enter to win prizes like lightsabers, books, candy and more.

These events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Avon Public Library at 970-949-6797.
