EAGLE-VAIL, Colorado ” Phil Qualman, the assistant principal at Battle Mountain High School, was a social studies teacher at the school before becoming assistant principal in 2006.

He said he’s thrilled about his recent promotion to principal ” he officially enters into his new role this summer. He has big plans for the school he has worked at since 2004, and looks forward to moving into the school’s brand new facility in Edwards this fall.

Vail Daily: How do you feel about the new gig as principal at Battle Mountain High School?

Phil Qualman: I’m very excited. I’m continuing to work with Brian Hester (the current principal) through the end of the year.

VD: What are you first priorities as principal?

PQ: I want to focus on the achievement gap and make sure all of our students are successful. We’re starting a new initiative focusing on school culture that is promoting respect for everyone, which we just started. A group of teachers and the dean of students is focusing on that, and it’s something I hope to keep an eye on. Also, the move of the facility is going to be a big transition so we want to make that as smooth as possible.

VD: Did you think you had a better chance than the rest of the candidates because you were already the school’s assistant principal?

PQ: I knew the members of the committee had the best interests of the school in mind. I knew if they selected someone from outside the school that it would be the best person for our school.
