VAIL VALLEY, Colorado ” Two Vail Valley, Colorado employers plan to pay to reserve the right to purchase homes in a Gypsum affordable housing complex for their workers.

The contracts ” which still have to be approved by the county commissioners ” are between the county and the Eagle River Water and Sanitation District and the Vail Valley Jet Center. They would give the two employers first crack at purchasing homes in Stratton Flats for people that work for them.

The reservations cost $2,500 a home.

“These are option contracts,” said Alex Potente, Eagle County’s director of housing. “As the units are released, they are given the right of first refusal.”

The water and sanitation district contract is for 10 homes and the jet center contract is for five homes.

Angelo Fernandez, the human resources director for the water district, said the company plans to purchase two of the deed-restricted homes right away to add to its inventory.

“When this started coming around we thought it would be a good option,” Fernandez said. “We’d be adding these units to our inventory to either sell or rent to our employees.”

The district has 32 units that it rents or sells to employees.

“We have a high demand,” Fernandez said.
