Vail Valley gets new field house in December
Vail, CO Colorado
VAIL, Colorado ” Construction of a Vail Valley field house in Edwards, Colorado should start in a couple weeks and be finished sometime in December.
“It’s going to start going really fast now,” said Steve Russell, director of the Western Eagle County Metropolitan Recreation District, which is in charge of the project.
In addition to soccer fields, the building will have indoor volleyball and basketball courts. Officials hope to host children’s activities in the afternoon and adult leagues in the evening. It will be built south of Interstate 70, east of the Edwards Spur Road and north of the Eagle River at Freedom Park.
The recreation district got its final approval for the project Tuesday from the county. Prior to that, the project had received a series of approvals from the county planning commission and the Miller Ranch design review board.
“It’s really exciting for our staff and our board,” Russell said. “We’ve had a bunch of calls and folks stopping in and saying they’re glad to see this thing going up.”
The county approved the leasing of the Miller Ranch land for the field house in October for $1 a year. The project is partially funded by a $4-million bond passed by voters in 2002.
Russell hopes kids jaws drop when they see the finished product.
“We want this to be one of the best indoor soccer arenas not just in the western part of the state but in all of Colorado,” Russell said.
While some of the outside parts of the building have been tweaked throughout the approval process, Russell said the majority of the plans for the inside of the building have remained the same.
The county chipped in $250,000 to have a sheriff substation constructed as part of the project.
