VAIL VALLEY, Colorado – A man died Friday evening while hiking on the Half Moon trail outside Minturn in Colorado’s Vail Valley, said Shannon Cordingly, a spokeswoman for the Eagle County Sheriff’s Department.

Patrick O’Brien, 57, from Belmont, Mich., died of heart disease while hiking with his son, Eagle County Coroner Kara Bettis said. An autopsy revealed the man had blockages in his coronary artery, she said. The man died about a quarter mile up the trail, Cordingly said.

“He was a very active person,” Bettis said. “He swam three to five miles a week and he rode a bike.”

Police received the call at 5:38 p.m. The sheriff’s department, Eagle County Ambulance District and Eagle River Fire Department responded, Cordingly said. The county plans to release the full report on the incident today, she said.

O’Brien had been in Colorado because he was visiting his son in Denver, Cordingly said.
