Special to the Vail DailyPieces by jewelry designer-duo Barbara Dean and Manfred Mueller can be found at Asian Village in Riverwalk Wednesday through Friday

VAIL, Colorado – Asian Village in Riverwalk in Edwards is hosting a trunk featuring new work by jewelry designer-duo Barbara Dean and Manfred Mueller.

Here for three days from their home in St. Louis, Dean and Mueller know their own strengths. Their jewelry is known for vibrant clear color, high stone quality and new and unusual stone cuts.

As a clothing designer for 25 years, Dean is naturally atuned to seasonal styles and colors incorporating the latest trends in fashion.

“I have a definite feeling about color and climate,” she said. “When it’s hot out, we respond differently to color.”

Dean has done in-depth gemology studies and strives to find “the best and most unusual for our customers,” she said. “There are new discoveries in stones every year. We love using the unusual.”

The pair met in the middle of the Atlantic, beginning their creative work together in 1998. Born in Nuremburg, Germany, Manfred’s artistry was expressed as head of food service for Olympic Airlines International, creating special private parties for Jackie Onassis and President Kennedy, and the Greek Royal Family, among many other luminaries.

“We both bring different inspirations to our work,” Dean said. “We each begin with our own concepts on pieces, then have a lively exchange of ideas. Manfred excels at wirework and the integration of shapes.”

“I’m a little color-blind,” Manfred said. “But when I met Barbara and considered jewelry-making, I thought to myself, ‘I can do that.’ Besides, we fell in love.”

Dean added, “Our signature shaded ombre pieces are a real collaboration. Manfred’s quirky combinations bring the freshness of an expressionistic canvas to our work.”

Dean and Mueller will be at Asian Village, across from Starbucks in Edwards, Wednesday through Friday. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
