VAIL VALLEY – Last fall the female duo known as the Boxcar Daisies could be found busking with their banjo and guitar on Bridge Street in Vail, Colorado. Only six months later, they packed up and headed out for a four-state tour celebrating the release of their debut album, “Riversong.”

The Daisies are back in Vail with a temporary third member of the group, mandolin player Katrina Cornell. The trio’s concert tonight at Kirby Cosmo’s BBQ kicks off a string of local shows.

The three musicians met last month during the Boxcar Daisies’ tour at a hootenany in Jackson, Wyo., Cornell’s hometown. Cornell bought the Daisies’ CD, learned all of the music, and offered to play a show with the duo.

“We got this call out of the blue, really, and were a little taken aback by the offer. But then the three of us got together and it was instant magic” says Elli Gauthier, of the Boxcar Daisies. “Katrina is everything you could hope for – an amazing instrumentalist, great singer and songwriter, and just a really nice, sincere person.”

A professional river guide, Cornell will be in Vail until April 15, when she’ll take off to guide a Grand Canyon river trip.
