The holidays are one of the hardest times of the year for those who have lost a loved one to suicide and Eagle County is no stranger to this horrible ending.
Vail Valley Medical Center is offering those impacted by suicide a free workshop Wednesday at the Shaw Regional Cancer Center.
Don Bissett and Mary Abbet, both of Vail Valley Medical Center, specialize in grief counseling and will host the workshop. Topics will include common elements of understanding suicide and helping a survivor heal. The course will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Shaw Regional Cancer Center conference room, located next to the cafe.
“Survivors of suicide may have a difficult time during special occasions because these events emphasize the absence of the person who has died,” said Bissett. “We respect the pain as a natural expression of the grief process. We need to learn from it and most importantly, never try to take the hurt away.”
