VAIL, Colorado ” The Guardian Scholars program, founded by Vail Valley Medical Center board chairman Ron Davis, was honored last month with the Child Welfare League of America’s first National Fostering Success Award.

Guardian Scholars supports former foster youth in Eagle County and elsewhere attend college. Guardian Scholars has programs at Mesa State College in Grand Junction, the University of Colorado at Boulder and California State University at Fullerton.

Many of the young adults who participate in the Guardian Scholars program have had seven or more placements in the foster care system; some as many as 12 placements.

“Due to the circumstances of these children’s lives, trust issues are one of the largest hurdles that they must overcome,” Davis said. “We help them trust again with 100 percent full rides to college and TLC.”

The Guardian Scholars program is support by state and federal funds, nonprofit foundations and the private sector.
