Vail Valley residents safe after being in Belize quake
Vail, CO Colorado
VAIL, Colorado ” Locals Tom and Laurie Mullen were awoken abruptly early in the morning around 2:30 a.m. Thursday morning by an earthquake off the coast of Honduras and Belize. The quake measured 7.1 on the Richter scale. The Mullens had been traveling throughout Belize for 10 days, and this was their last night in Placencia and Belize.
“I woke up to a banging and shaking of the bedroom and first thought the ceiling fan was hitting something and malfunctioning,” Laurie Mullen said. “Then my next thought was a tropical storm had arrived. When I got up, the whole room and structure were shaking. Pottery was smashing on the tile floors and items on the walls were rising and slamming against the walls. It lasted about 30 seconds but seemed like an eternity.”
The Mullens returned safely to Colorado later the same day.
A survey showed a good bit of support for local government action to bolster workforce housing in town. For now though, that support stops at supporting a new tax for funding.
