VAIL VALLEY “-Both Battle Mountain High School and Eagle Valley Middle School are looking for principals for the 2009-10 school year in Colorado’s Vail Valley

Brian Hester is retiring from Battle Mountain, where he earned the “Colorado Principal of the Year” honor last year. Jerry Santoro is retiring from Eagle Valley Middle School after being principal there for 18 years.

The schools held meetings with staff and parents to find out the traditions they wanted to keep in each school, changes they hoped for and the qualities they look for in a new principal.

Interviews are scheduled for the week of Feb. 23. The school district’s interview committee will recommend three finalists to Superintendent Sandra Smyser, who will then hold secondary interviews with the three finalists and then give her final recommendation to the Board of Education. The board will decide on the candidates by July 1.

“The process is set up where all the key groups have a say in the selections of these two critical positions, but no one person or group has an undue sway over the outcome,” states Jason Glass, director of human resources.
