EDWARDS – Beth Slifer started her design company for the mountains. Now the company is expanding to the city.

Slifer Designs, founded by Slifer in 1984, has established a reputation for its work in resort areas in Colorado and other states. Those who know the company also recognize its red-stag logo. But there aren’t many big bull elk in Denver, so along with the company’s expansion, the logo has changed, too.

“The stag kind of pigeonholed the company in the mountains,” company spokeswoman Holly Johnson said. The new logo will identify the company as one ready to do business just about anywhere, she said.

These days, Slifer Designs, like most companies, is re-thinking how it works. The company’s stock in trade for years was interior design in homes and hotels. There aren’t many of those being built these days, so the company is now looking at remodeling and other design jobs.

Slifer Designs recently remodeled the model units at The Ascent, which has about 30 of the 49 units under contract. The company also remodeled show units at the Edgemont condos in Steamboat Springs.

“We’re doing a lot of remodeling work, helping developers sell new or remodeled properties,” Slifer said.

“Buyers need extra reasons to buy,” she added, saying that showing a furnished and decorated condo can help potential buyers envision what their place could look like.

While Slifer has turned over day-to-day operations at the company to Yvonne Jacobs, she’s excited by the prospect of opening a showroom in Denver, particularly in the tony Cherry Creek neighborhood.

First, this is a good time to lease vacant space, she said.

It’s also a chance for the company to expand its inventory.

“It will be all the things we have here, but we’ll also have a product mix we don’t currently have,” Jacobs said.

That means products more in line with living in the city, not the mountains.

Expanding to Denver also promises to raise the company’s visibility.

“Cherry Creek’s also Denver’s number-one tourist attraction,” Slifer said. “That area gets visitors from all over.”

If that leads to work in Denver, or New Mexico or Wyoming, that’s fine with Slifer Designs’ founder.

“Our focus is still resorts,” Slifer said. “But we’re happy to do homes, remodel hotels… whatever.”
