Vail Valley: Tie vote for Edwards seat on fire board
VAIL VALLEY, Colorado – Michael Gallagher was re-elected to the Eagle River Fire Protection District board seat for District 2, which represents Minturn, Red Cliff and parts of Avon.
The election in District 4 ended in the tie, with both incumbent John McCaulley and challenger Al Bosworth receiving 89 votes. The District 4 seat represents Edwards.
The canvass board will meet and review the certificates of return in the election, said Kris Nash of the Fire District. If the review confirms the tie, there will be a recount. Nash said she believed that if the recount confirms the tie, there will be a drawing of lots to determine the winner, adding that the district will be checking with its legal counsel to ensure it is following the correct path.
Gallagher got 125 votes, while challenger Jeff Boock got 60 votes.
“This just gives me an opportunity to continue doing the work, the good stewardship of the people’s money and the good protection when they need it,” Gallagher said, adding that he thinks Boock is a capable candidate who should run again.
Gallagher, who will serve another four-year term, said his top priority will be addressing the downturn in tax revenue that is expected in 2012.
In a ballot question, voters rejected lifting term limits, 107-74. Current rules limit board members to two four-year terms.
The district includes six fire stations that serve Avon, Arrowhead, Bachelor Gulch, Beaver Creek, Cordillera, Eagle-Vail, Edwards, Minturn, Red Cliff and Wolcott.
