Vail Valley Voices: Eagle board progresses

Brandi Resa'Vail, CO, Colorado

Per Mayor Kostick, history was made at the latest Eagle Town Board meeting as the first consent agenda was approved covering seven items. Although there are still some process kinks to work out, this change will hopefully reduce the length of the meetings, which always seems a topic of discussion at 200 Broadway. Public comment started the evening and then returned after the consent agenda. As a result of the mayor visiting schools for a civics lesson, Tanner Manzanares was inspired to give a presentation on the idea of having a zoo in Eagle that would include a bear, his favorite animal. Additional public comment included comments on handicapped parking downtown and a request and then an approval for a $1,001 donation toward the Rocky Mountain Oyster Feed fundraiser presented by the Eagle County 4-H.Two liquor licenses were approved with some discussion on the paperwork needed for review by the licensing board. Next up was the land use public hearing for the special use permit for the Higher Elevation Healing Arts School at 113 Fourth St. Besides the Board’s unanimous approval, there was wonderful supportive public comment on this business relocation from Edwards. The Wolcott development agenda item made at least its third appearance at Town Hall and will make at least one more. The board agreed to review the general details of the plan and then consider offering comments to the Eagle County commissioners. The discussion item of the organizational chart and structure of the town government was delayed until the executive session portion of the meeting before the board gave direction to staff to continue working on refinancing the 2004 water revenue bonds.Future agenda and board comments included a comment over the headline of my previous recap (written by an editor, not Brandi), a request on the options to be able to pay planning and zoning members, a question on the educational funds available and team approach for the upcoming Colorado Municipal League conference in Vail June 18-2, a statement that public hearings presentations by staff are for the benefit of the public, and a request to have an FYI to the board as to new business licenses given by the town. The big announcement on the evening was of course the finalists for the town manager position, which the chairman of the search committee, Trustee Joe Knabel, presented in alphabetical order: Tom Gosiorowski, Ryan Mahoney and Jon Stavney. Before heading into executive session, a thank you was given to the town’s attorney, Ed Sands of Garfield & Hecht P.C., for going above and beyond with his effort on the previous evening’s executive session. If want to go above and beyond as a citizen and get involved with local politics, consider starting that journey by attending the next meeting, which will be Tuesday, March 26, at 6 p.m. You can also sign up for emails at http://www.townofeagle.org or follow along my own adventure at http://www.brandionboard.wordpress.com.See y’all at Town Hall!
