Vail Valley Voices: Tom Terrific this candidate ain’t
An anagram for Tancredo is “Taco Nerd.”
Anyway, in 1998, during his initial congressional campaign, Tom Tancredo pledged to serve only three terms and was chairman of the Colorado Term Limits Coalition.
Yep, the man was big on term limits for elected officials.
The former five-term representative (yes, five, as in cinco) from the 6th Congressional District not only reneged on his own pledge, he has now reneged from his own party, the GOP, and switched horses over to the conveniently called CP, which I believe stands for Crazier Party.
If you’re over 18 and awake, chances are you’re already familiar with looney tooney Tom’s tact-free take on illegal immigration. But trust me when I say a few shadows would be welcome coverage on the steps of the Constitution Party’s platform as well.
These people make the Wahhabi sect of Islam appear mildly intolerant of others religious views.
The CP took a hodge-podge of libertarian ideas, threw it into a melting pot that only melts one color (off-white), covered the top with a twisted mix of medieval Christian dogma, and called it a guide to “restore American jurisprudence to its Biblical foundations and to limit the federal government to its constitutional boundaries.”
Wow, and all this time I thought our jurisprudence was based upon a foundation of freedom.
Here’s just a sampling of their platform: They wish to repeal the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Endangered Species Act of 1973, all federal campaign finance laws, shut down the departments of Energy and Education, the Federal Election Commission, the IRS, the FDA and retake the Panama Canal. They do not want women to have a right over what happens to their own body, whether it’s being used in a sexual tryst or in combat, and you can guess what they think about gays.
And, oh, they also want to immediately collect all foreign debts owed to the U.S. and at the same time pay off every debt we have and never borrow another penny from anyone ever again.
You know, simple stuff.
If Tancredo is actually serious about representing these people, as opposed to just maneuvering himself into a position for some future endeavor, then he needs to realize there are more people living in Minturn than there are currently registered members of the CP in Colorado (I am, of course, including illegals in my totals).
So apparently he is not serious at all, and intends to do as much harm to the GOP as he possibly can before dropping out at the last minute to announce he has saved the day for the GOP.
Sounds eerily similar to the Bush strategy for winning a war.
Either way, Tancredo is Colorado’s version of Rod Blagojevich, an outspoken buffoon worthy of little more than a cursory glance over the left shoulder, and I look forward to his reality TV game show in the near future.
