DENVER, Colorado – A former Alaskan Extreme Skiing Champion and veteran of nine World Extreme Skiing Championships, as well 21 Warren Miller film titles, has plenty to share. This year, Chris Anthony will bring his story to the classroom to provide educational lectures to area students.

Anthony has partnered with SOS Outreach, an outdoor and winter sports nonprofit for youth, and will now serve as spokesperson for the organization to introduce skiing, snowboarding, and other outdoor activities to Denver-area youth.

“Any time I’m able to get out in the community and try to get kids off the couch is great,” said Anthony, who has given similar presentations to fifth- and sixth-graders over the last eight years through Colorado Ski Country and 5th Grade Passport Program. “Of course we want to get kids on the hill, but I really look forward to working with SOS because we share the belief that the activity can be a vehicle for personal growth and empowerment.”

Anthony uses film footage from his 21 years of traveling with the Warren Miller film team to create a multi-media experience that engages students. While the students are drawn in by the on screen ski action they benefit from geographical and cultural journey they are taken on through the presentations. Anthony uses the opportunity to encourage kids to take initiative, work hard, dream big and chase down their goals. Teachers have found the talks to be very beneficial and have asked for his return multiple times over the years.

SOS Outreach founder and executive director, Arn Menconi, says the organization looks forward to working more closely with Anthony in the next few months.

“We couldn’t be more excited to work with Chris,” Menconi said. “He’s a fantastic role model, and really gets the kids pumped about exploring what Colorado has to offer. We expect to see some of those same kids skiing and snowboarding this year, but also expect his ambition to have an effect on kids in other parts of their lives as well.”

Anthony’s school presentations were made possible by a grant from the Anschutz Foundation.
