Vail Valley’s SOS wins outdoor recreation award

VAIL, Colorado ” Vail Valley, Colorado-based SOS Outreach has been recognized for its programs that get kids outdoors by a coalition of recreation organizations.

SOS, which tries to help 5,000 kids a year improve in school by teaching them to ski or snowboard, how received Choose Outdoors’ first ever Royal Robbins Award.

Robbins, vice president of Choose Outdoors, is an influential American mountain climber and kayaker who is the first too climb a number of mountains and paddle several rivers.

“Out of all the national organizations we looked at, we wanted to recognize SOS for what they’ve done to get youth involved in the outdoors,” said Bruce Ward, president of Choose Outdoors.

Other organizations that were honored included the International Mountain Bicycling Association, National Get Outdoors Day, Thorne Ecological, Building On Life’s Disappointments , Leave No Trace and the U.S. Forest Service.
