VAIL — Recommit to yourself and your health in 2016 with Yoga 101, a four-week course offered by the Vail Vitality Center. The series is taught by renowned local yoga teacher Tracy Long and designed for new students and those wishing to rediscover their practice. It begins Monday and continues Mondays from 3 to 4:15 p.m. through Feb. 1.

According to the Vail Vitality Center, yoga is transformational in many ways. Want to lose weight or manage stress? Try yoga. Hoping to build muscle and gain flexibility? Check out yoga. Yoga has a proven track record of initiating radical life change and teaches practitioners to be participants, not bystanders, in their own evolution.

Yoga 101 covers basic yoga philosophy, safe alignment and modifications of primary poses, sustainable breath and use of props. Each class is a combination of discussion and practice.

“People can expect an inviting and intimate group setting, a digestible and accessible introduction to yoga, a comfortable environment for asking questions and a strong emphasis on safe alignment and personal attention,” Long said.

Long is a lifelong athlete who first came to yoga in 2001 in an attempt to stretch muscles made tight from running. She received her initial 200-hour yoga certification in 2008 and attended her first training in 2009 with her primary teacher, Baron Baptiste. Long is a certified Baptiste power yoga teacher and has her 500-hour yoga certification under Shannon Paige.
