Vail’s Menconi wins diversity award

VAIL ” Arn Menconi, founder and executive director of Vail Valley-based SOS Outreach, has won an award for getting minority kids involved in winter sports.

The award was given by Ski Area Management as part of its 12th annual SAMMY Leadership Awards.

“It honors those who understand that the future of winter sports will rely heavily on bringing more diverse groups into our resorts,” said SAM Magazine publisher Jennifer Rowan. “SOS and Arn Menconi have been doing this successfully for years. Their efforts have introduced thousands of young adults to the sport and given our industry a great group of future customers.”

Menconi said SOS Outreach’s staff and volunteers played a large role in the award.

“This award really reflects just how hard our staff and volunteers have worked through the years,” he said. “It also would not have been possible without organizations like Vail Resorts that take diversity seriously, not just for reasons of equity, but because they understand they’re reaching out to the next generation of skiers and snowboarders.”
