Valley in Brief: Jack Kemp to speak in Vail Thursday
VAIL ” Longtime Washington insider and former congressman Jack Kemp will talk about Social Security reform and President Bush’s “ownership society” at 7 p.m., Thursday at the Donovan Pavilion.
Kemp, a former secretary of Housing and Urban Development and once a candidate for vice president, is the founder and chairman of Kemp Partners, a corporate consulting company based in Washington, D.C.
He also campaigns regularly for tax reform and has been writing a weekly column for the Copley News Service since February, 2000.
From January 1993 until July 2004, Kemp was co-director of Empower America, a Washington D.C.-based public policy organization he co-founded with William Bennett and Jeane Kirkpatrick.
Kemp represented the Buffalo area and western New York in Congress for 18 years, from 1971 to 1989. Before his election to Congress in 1970, Mr. Kemp played pro football for 13 years.
He was a quarterback for the San Diego Chargers and the Buffalo Bills.

AVON ” The second race in the Dunk N Dash biathlon series takes place at Nottingham park and lake on Aug. 24.
Swimmers hit the water at 6 p.m. for the 800-yard swim, which is followed by a 5-kilometer run around the park and on the Eagle River recreational path.
The water temperature for the races can be expected to be 65 degrees to 70 degrees.
The race is a predecessor to the TriAmerica Avon-to-Vail triathlon on Labor Day weekend. Pre-registration is open until the day before race day at Active.com. On race day, competitors can register by the lake beginning at 4 p.m.
AVON ” Avon Elementary School holds it annual ice cream social fro 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The event allows students and parents to meet teachers before school resumes Thursday. Students can also drop off supplies in their classrooms.
EAGLE-VAIL ” All Battle Mountain High School students, grades 9-12, are to report for the first day of school on Thursday at 8:30 a.m.
Ninth graders are invited to the “Husky Day” orientation on Wednesday at 8:30 AM in the auditorium. Ninth-graders must bring permission slips to participate in the “Meet the Wilderness” activities. A barbecue lunch will be provided.
