Valley View among top hospitals

Dr. Drew Werner

EAGLE COUNTY – To our coaches, Gary, Deb, Cathy, Alice, Larry and Ross: You lead a great team! To all our teammates who are too numerous to mention, but we wouldn’t have made the all stars with out you. To our support staff, behind the scenes but as important as anyone on the bench. To our friends and volunteers. You truly have helped us make the grade. We have had winning seasons, but haven’t won the Super Bowl or clinched the World Cup, until now. We’ve been to the dance but haven’t won the championship, until now. The World Series has been just out of our grasp and we have just missed the checkered flag, until now. The Stanley Cup has slipped from our grasp, until now.Which team am I talking about? Which trophy did we take home? If you need medical care, the most important one of all. Valley View Hospital has just been named one of the top 100 hospitals in the country and one of the top 20 small community hospitals in our United States. It is no less of a feat than any of the pinnacles of sporting competition I’ve mentioned. We live in a place blessed with the top athletes in the world in many forms of sport. They make the headlines, and we cheer them on. Rarely do we think of the excellence of medical care so close to home.Modern HealthCare magazine has just published the 2004 Solucient survey listing the top 100 hospitals in the country. A well-respected health-care organization devoted to monitoring health-care quality, Solucient has published their list for 12 years. Organized by hospital size and academic affiliation, the list is a truly outstanding accomplishment. In the United States, we have 5,000 hospitals. Of those, 1,147 are designated as small-community hospitals. Making that list places Valley View Hospital in the top 2 percent of hospitals nationally. In order to make the list, each hospital was graded on patient safety, complication-free care and survival, as well as overall hospital operational performance. The hospitals that make the list are considered to set the national benchmarks for quality in those areas. Looking at in a more sober fashion, Solucient estimates that if all the 5,000 hospitals in the U.S. performed at the same level as Valley View Hospital and the 99 others on the list, 66,342 more patients could survive and 66,506 more patients could be complication-free. That alone would save our nation $6,200,000,000 annually! It is the teamwork that makes it all happen, and I am proud and honored to be part of Valley View Hospital’s team. As a member of our community, I am glad to have such excellence in our midst.Congratulations are certainly due!Our local health fairs are just a month away. Stay tuned for full details and information. Until then, think of all our local medical champions and especially Valley View Hospital for their top 100 standing.Remember your health is your responsibility. Health is our greatest asset and it doesn’t happen by accident.
