GYPSUM ” Flames and smoke engulfed Edwards resident Manuel Bustillos’ van Sunday as he made his way to church in Gypsum.

As Bustillos headed down Highway 6, the driver behind him and pedestrians noticed smoke and signaled him to pull over. Bustillos pulled over, got out of the car and walked away uninjured.

“I say ‘thank you’ to God now because I only lost my van, not my life,” Bustillos said.

Lt. Justin Kirkland of the Gypsum Fire Protection District said firefighters doused the vehicle with water. Western Eagle County Ambulance District also responded to the call and helped a person who became injured in an attempt to help.

Bustillos said he was unsure what caused his van to catch fire, adding that he regularly checks his van to make sure it is working properly.
