VAIL — About once in a lifetime, a kid gets to look a member of the New York Philharmonic right in the eyes and boss them around.

The Very Young Composers workshop still has room for a few more kids, said Conrad Kehn, director.

It’s for any student third grade and up, and you don’t have to be able to play music, or read music.

“No training is necessary whatsoever. We handle all that,” Kehn said.

Kids create their own musical piece from start to finish during a week-long workshop. They can sing it, hum it, play it on their smartphone … it doesn’t matter, Kehn said.

With the help of teaching artists, students learn about music theory and how to compose for different instruments. Then, they write their own story and set the story to music in a step-by-step process.

The program culminates in a public performance of all the student compositions.

The Very Young Composers program was brought to Vail in 2006 by its creator, John Deak of the New York Philharmonic.
